OPEN STUDIO COUNTDOWN: 10 days left!

Only 10 days to our popular annual Open Studios / Holiday Sale at Hatch Street! We start Friday, November 17 from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by a party for all with live music by Pumpkin Head Ted. Our event continues on Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday features live music throughout the day by steel drum ensemble El Caribe, and Sunday will include live performances by guitarist Butch McCarthy. Food all weekend by Destination Soups.

When you come to visit, stop by Richard Connor's space in Studio 410. Richard represents the estate of Joseph Edwards Alexander (1947-2008), a prolific painter who studied at Swain School of Design in New Bedford and explored a wide range of genres including landscape and abstraction.

Richard was struck by Alexander's artistic achievements at first sight, and currently mounts exhibits of the late painter's work locally and nationally. The Hatch Street open studios event is a great opportunity to discover this New Bedford artist, both by viewing his creations and by talking with Richard, who clearly admires him and deeply connects with his work.

Check out this video, documenting a 2014 show of Alexander's work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sX6f7kMOJY

All features great and small

Hatch Street artist Jacob Ginga, a.k.a. Maker Jake, who works in Studio 406, has been focusing on portraits in the new year, with dramatic shifts in scale. His abstract faces in acrylic on wood panels feature strong colors embellished with touches of black and white. But the artist always reserves little peeks of the original wood grain surface to contrast with the brightly painted geometric shapes.

Here are some of his small works, which fit in the palm of your hand:

And here is his largest piece yet (and the newest of the series), titled "Starboy,"50" H x 26" W:

Artworks are available for purchase through the artist; for more information, message @makerjakestudio or visit https://www.facebook.com/makerjakestudio.

Latest work: Kim Barry

One of the ongoing purposes of this blog is to keep you informed of what our artists are up to. True, we offer public events and exhibits on certain dates throughout the year, but the creative process is going on inside our studios every day. The blog gives you a chance to take a peek all year long, even when we're not formally "open" or on display!

Here is a brand new painting by artist Kim Barry, whose space is located in Studio 410. It is titled "Quahog," and is oil on canvas, 18" square.

Stay tuned for ongoing spotlights on our artists!
